What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Eternity (Truth or Deception?)

  • Larissa Fay

Millions report near-death experiences—but are they revealing truth or deception? What they saw may change how you see eternity.

Millions of people—from different countries, different beliefs, even atheists—have all described something strikingly similar after they died.

Not just similar… the same.

A light.
A presence.
A life review.

And in some cases… something far darker.

During one of the most spiritually confusing seasons of my life, I went deep into near-death experiences. I wasn’t casually curious—I was searching for answers.

What I found completely changed how I see God, eternity, and Jesus Christ.

But here’s the problem…

Not everything people experience on the other side is truth.

So how do we know what’s real… and what’s deception?

My Journey Into Near-Death Experiences

Before I truly understood who Jesus was, I became obsessed with near-death experiences.

I read them.
Watched interviews.
Studied patterns.

And what shook me most was this:

These weren’t just religious people trying to prove something.

They were doctors. Skeptics. Ordinary people… who clinically died… and came back with stories that lined up in ways that shouldn’t be possible.

That’s what sparked my spiritual awakening.

But it also left me with a question I couldn’t ignore:

If these experiences are real… what do they actually mean?

What Research Shows

Researchers have been studying near-death experiences for decades.

Psychiatrists, doctors, and investigators have analyzed thousands of cases—and across cultures, religions, and belief systems, the patterns are incredibly consistent.

Even among people who didn’t believe in God.

That alone forces you to consider something deeper is happening.

A Critical Truth Most People Miss

Before going further, you need to understand something important:

These are called near-death experiences for a reason.

These people didn’t fully cross over.

Their spirit was still connected to their body.

Because if that connection had been completely broken… they wouldn’t have come back.

So yes—these experiences can be revealing.

But no—they are not the ultimate truth.

The Most Common Positive Experiences

Many people describe leaving their bodies and watching everything happening around them—from above.

Some even accurately recall details they shouldn’t have been able to see.

Then something happens.

They begin moving upward… toward a light.

But this isn’t just light.

It’s described as a living presence.

Overwhelming love.
Perfect peace.
Complete purity.

Scripture says:

“God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)

The Life Review

One of the most powerful and consistent experiences is something called a life review.

But it’s not what most people expect.

God isn’t standing there condemning them.

They’re the ones judging themselves.

Because they feel everything.

Every word.
Every action.
Every moment.

But here’s the difference—

They experience it from the perspective of the people they affected.

When they hurt someone… they feel that pain.
When they loved someone… they feel that too.

It’s truth—without escape.

Jesus said:

“Whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for Me.” (Matthew 25:40)

Other Common Experiences

Many people report:

  • Seeing loved ones who have passed

  • Experiencing beauty beyond description

  • Feeling like that realm is more real than this life

And almost all of them say the same thing:

They didn’t want to come back.

Some return because of their children or family.

Others are told:

“It’s not your time yet.”

The Side No One Wants to Talk About

Not all near-death experiences are peaceful.

Some are terrifying.

Instead of going upward… people describe falling.

Into darkness.
Into isolation.
Into a complete absence of love.

What Hell Actually Is

There’s a misunderstanding about hell.

It’s not just punishment.

It’s separation from God.

And if God is everything good… everything pure… everything loving…

Then what’s left in His absence?

Darkness.
Despair.
Pain.

Jesus warned about this reality clearly—not to scare people, but because it’s real.

Here’s What Should Wake You Up

Many people who had these negative experiences weren’t “evil.”

They weren’t the worst of society.

Some were holding onto things like:

  • Unforgiveness

  • Bitterness

  • Resentment

And that weight didn’t disappear when they died.

It separated them.

Scripture says:

“Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer…” (1 John 3:15)

That’s uncomfortable—but it matters.

Because it shows:

You don’t have to be outwardly “bad” to be spiritually separated from God.

When People Cry Out to Jesus

Here’s where it gets undeniable.

In many of these dark experiences… people cry out to Jesus.

And instantly—

Everything changes.

Light breaks through.
Darkness disappears.
They’re pulled out.

Some of these people didn’t even believe in Him before that moment.

But when everything else was stripped away…

They knew who to call.

But There’s a Warning Here

Don’t misinterpret this.

This doesn’t mean you get another chance after death.

It’s very possible these people were being shown where their lives were leading—

before it became permanent.

The Part Almost No One Talks About: Deception

Some near-death experiences start peaceful…

But turn dark at the very end.

If those people had come back just seconds earlier—

They would have believed their experience was completely positive.

That should make you pause.

Because it reveals something critical:

Even in the spiritual realm… deception exists.

Scripture warns:

“Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14)

Why Near-Death Experiences Can’t Be Your Foundation

Near-death experiences can point to something real.

They can show you there is more than this life.

But they cannot define truth.

Because they can be incomplete.

And they can be deceptive.

That’s why your foundation cannot be an experience.

It has to be truth.

Jesus Is Not One Option—He Is The Way

Jesus didn’t leave room for interpretation.

He said:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

Not a way.

Not one path among many.

The way.

And if you look closely—even in near-death experiences—

His name carries authority like no other.

A Real Question You Shouldn’t Ignore

Be honest with yourself for a second.

Are there things in your life you’ve been holding onto?

Resentment.
Pain.
Unforgiveness.

Things you keep telling yourself you’ll deal with later?

But what if later comes sooner than you expect?

This Is About More Than Eternity

Jesus doesn’t just prepare you for what happens after you die.

He transforms your life right now.

He removes the weight.
He restores what’s broken.
He brings peace where there’s been chaos.

And He replaces fear… with certainty.
